Lima isn’t always what you expect—and neither are its malls.

When I first began visiting Peru in 2009, shopping meant artisan markets, colorful textiles, and the joy of discovery. Luxury? Not so much. But as Lima evolved, so did its retail spaces—into places that are not only beautiful but thoughtfully designed. Two of my favorites: Larcomar and Jockey Plaza.

One is perched dramatically above the sea. The other is a modern, elegant hub just outside the city’s center. Both are more than just shopping destinations—they’re architectural experiences that reflect the richness and complexity of life in Lima.

Larcomar: Cliffside Glamour with a Global Pulse

Built into the cliffs of Miraflores, Larcomar feels like it defies gravity. Designed by Eduardo Figari Gold and opened in 1998, the mall descends rather than rises, revealing itself slowly in cascading terraces as you walk down toward the Pacific.

I remember being dropped off at the taxi stand thinking, “where are they leaving me? I don’t see a mall” –– and then boom!

The design doesn’t just use the cliff—it embraces it. Steel, stone, and glass combine to create a space that feels both grounded and elevated. You don’t exactly hear the ocean—it’s too high above the shore, but you do feel its presence. The air shifts and the horizon stretches wide. You really do almost feel like you’re on a cruise ship.

Adding the sense of movement is the fact that Larcomar buzzes with the energy of people from all over the world. You’ll hear Spanish, English, French, German, Japanese, Chinese, Russian…I could go. It’s tourists coming off their Machu Picchu treks. Travelers heading into the Amazon. Locals out for an afternoon paseo. Everyone swept into this shared, open-air space overlooking the sea.

And that’s what I love most: even if we don’t speak the same language, here we’re speaking the same one—beautiful design, good food, and a little shopping. These are my languages of choice.

Restaurants like Tanta, Mangos, and Trattoria Mambrino maximize the mall’s dramatic setting with terraces and panoramic views. You’re not just having lunch—you’re part of the architecture.

Although a recent earthquake raised concerns, the structure has since been cleared and reopened safely. The energy is back. The views are still stunning.

Jockey Plaza: Lima’s Luxe Lifestyle Hub

Located in Surco, Jockey Plaza is Lima’s largest and most polished shopping center. It may sit on the suburban edge of the city, but its vibe is distinctly modern—sophisticated, spacious, and full of style.

The 2010 addition of the Boulevard wing was a game-changer. With open-air walkways, sleek storefronts, and elegant landscaping, Jockey became more than a mall—it became a lifestyle destination.

A Place That Grows With You

I’ve been coming to Jockey Plaza for years, and every time I do, it gives me something new.

It’s where I took my son Niko to see the holiday lights when he was five. It’s where I stumbled on HOFF sneakers for the first time. It’s where I wander into Zara Home and walk out with inspiration I didn’t know I needed.

It’s also where Lima’s best-loved local brands—like Butrich and Alpaca 111—stand proudly alongside international names like Louis Vuitton and Dolce & Gabbana. Everything is curated, but approachable.

The Best of Both Worlds

Jockey Plaza and Larcomar couldn’t be more different—but they’re both architectural love letters to Lima’s growth.

Jockey is light-filled, grounded, and local.

Larcomar is layered, dramatic, and globally connected.

And together, they tell a beautiful story: that in Lima, luxury isn’t about exclusivity—it’s about experience.

Because sometimes, shopping isn’t just a task. It’s a way of seeing. A way of connecting. A way of being in a city that never stops surprising you.

Of course, I know Larcomar and Jockey Plaza aren’t the only malls in Lima. There’s Real Plaza Salaverry, known for its rooftop dining and family-friendly vibe; Plaza San Miguel, a longtime local favorite with a relaxed atmosphere; and Mall del Sur, a newer addition offering a huge variety of stores and entertainment.

I’m eager to explore them all—because if they’re anything like these two, I am definitely down for more mall architecture, good food, and stylish surprises in the heart of Lima.
