At the time, that felt like a big risk—a little different from the usual tourist experience, which tends to focus on cultural landmarks and souvenir shopping.

Back then (this was 2010), Jockey Plaza was a mix of big global brands like Zara and H&M and novel stores I had never heard of, like Menthe & Chocolate and Marquis—where I scored a haul of clothes at a fraction of what I’d pay at home, many piece I still use today!

Jockey Plaza has come a long way since then. Now, you’ll find luxury stores like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Dior. They don’t carry full collections like in Beverly Hills (it’s mostly accessories and perfumes), but still, they’re there!

Jockey Plaza is also a lifesaver if your bags didn’t make it, you forgot something from home, or you need an emergency pair of shoes. With stores like Gap, Banana Republic, Crocs, Birkenstock (new!), and even Starbucks, it feels so much like a mall at home—and yet, still somehow different.

What Makes Jockey Plaza Different?

The selection. Peru’s opposite seasons (our winter is their summer and vice versa) means what’s on the racks might not even be available in the U.S. yet. I’ve scored Zara pieces that never made it stateside.

And I had never even seen a Zara Home before this trip!

The name Jockey Plaza comes from its location next to the Hipódromo de Monterrico, Lima’s famous horse racing track. The mall was built on former racetrack grounds, and you can still see the influence in its branding and design.

Since opening in 1997, Jockey Plaza has grown into Peru’s largest and most prestigious shopping mall, attracting millions of visitors each year.
