Wondering what to pack for Lima Peru? When I started traveling to Lima, we mostly went when my son was on vacation, which meant in December and March. As those months tend to be warmer, I did great packing lots of tees, white pants, a skirt, light sweatshirts, and a windbreaker. Then, I ended up visiting Lima one year in October, and (stupidly) assuming the weather would be the same, I packed similarly.
Big mistake!
My warm-weather wardrobe choices left me quite unprepared, read I was freezing (note I’m a California girl through and through, under 70, and I need a coat). Now, no tears were shed, as I got to buy new things at some of my favorite boutiques and felt justified in the acquisitions. But obviously, that’s not a smart strategy.
So, as you plan your trip, whether you’ll be strolling along the vibrant streets of Miraflores, exploring Barranco’s bohemian charm, or savoring the city’s legendary cuisine, here’s how to know what to pack for Lima, no matter the time of year.
Understand Lima’s Weather: Gray Skies or Sunny Vibes?
Lima’s weather varies less by temperature and more by its iconic garúa (coastal mist).
- May to October (Gray Season): Overcast skies and cooler temperatures, typically between 60°F (16°C) and 66°F (19°C).
- November to April (Sunny Season): Warmer, sunnier days, with highs up to 80°F (27°C).
Rain is almost nonexistent, but that doesn’t mean you won’t feel the damp chill during gray months.
Clothing Essentials for Lima, Peru
Year-Round Must-Haves
- Light Jacket or Sweater: Perfect for layering during Lima’s cooler evenings or gray mornings.
- Comfortable Walking Shoes: Lima’s streets are a mix of modern sidewalks and historic cobblestones. Stylish sneakers or casual flats are your best friends.
- Smart Casual Outfits: The city’s dining and nightlife scene is chic—pack a few stylish pieces for upscale restaurants or evening outings.

Packing for the Grey or Rainy Season (May to October)
- Water-Resistant Outerwear: The misty garúa can leave you feeling damp, so a lightweight, water-resistant jacket is handy. My Favorite Jackets to bring are from Uniqlo. They are lightweight and pack down to nothing!
- Scarves: A cozy scarf keeps you warm and doubles as an accessory.
Sunny Season Packing (November to April)
- Sunscreen & Sunglasses: Lima’s coastal sun can be intense during the day.
- Breathable Fabrics: Lightweight tops and dresses will keep you comfortable.
Tech and Travel Gear
- Plugs: Peru uses 220-volt electricity, and while most plugs are the two-pronged flat type like in the U.S., you’ll also find three-pronged and two-pronged circular types—so it’s best to bring an adapter to cover all bases. If you forget one, no stress—you can grab an inexpensive adapter with USB ports at the airport or a nearby ferretería (hardware store) once you’re here.
- Portable Charger: With so many photo ops, you don’t want to run out of juice. Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated while exploring and avoid buying plastic bottles.

Don’t Forget These Lima-Specific Items
- Daypack, Tote or Crossbody Bag: Great for carrying essentials while exploring museums, markets, and parks.
- Lip Balm: The coastal breeze can be drying.
- Lightweight Umbrella (Optional): Useful during gray months if you’re sensitive to drizzle.

Pro Packing Tips for Lima
- Pack in Layers: Lima’s weather can shift throughout the day—layers make it easy to adapt.
- Leave Heavy Rain Gear at Home: A simple jacket is enough since Lima’s “rain” is more of a mist.
- Bring a Pop of Color: Lima’s vibrant streets and murals make for great photos; bright clothing adds flair to your travel pics.
