I have a confession to make, and it’s a big one for someone who blogs about Lima: markets and street food are not my thing. I’m not an adventurous eater, and crowds can be… let’s just say “a lot.”

I can hear the collective gasp. I will, in the immortal words of Mel Robbins, let you have all the feelings.

And now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let me tell you about a market I do absolutely love: La Feria Unión de Barranco.

A Market with Soul

Nestled in the bohemian heart of Barranco—Lima’s most romantic, artsy, and free-spirited district—La Feria Unión de Barranco pulses with creativity and community. Located at Jr. Unión 108, this weekly market (open Wednesday through Sunday) is everything I didn’t know I needed in a market: clean, bright, beautifully curated, and welcoming.

Stalls overflow with handmade jewelry, sustainable fashion, vegan treats, indulgent sweets, natural medicine, crystals, tarot readings, and soulful conversations. For a solo female traveler, it’s the kind of place where you can wander without worry, sip something delicious, and feel part of the neighborhood’s rhythm.

A Little Barranco Backstory

Barranco has long been Lima’s refuge for artists, poets, and dreamers. Officially established as a district in 1874, it began as a quiet fishing village before evolving into a seaside retreat for Lima’s elite. Over time, its cobblestone streets and European-inspired casonas (mansions) became a canvas for creativity—drawing musicians, painters, and free spirits from all over.

Today, it’s a vibrant blend of art galleries, cafés, and a lively nightlife. While the bar scene isn’t my thing, strolling through Barranco—especially at the Feria—absolutely is.

Whimsy in Wearable Form

While there are countless stalls offering things I’d love to take home, I tried my best to be disciplined and not buy anything. It was… challenging.

I was particularly smitten with QAPARY Pijamas de Mujer. Their patterns are gorgeous, and the soft, heavenly cotton feels like a hug you never want to take off. Literally—run, don’t walk.

A little further down the aisle, I spotted a stall that instantly tugged at my inner child—Clay Zoal Jewelry. Every piece is handcrafted with a playful, storybook charm: miniature clay animals, dreamy pendants, and colorful keepsakes that feel like tiny works of art. They’re perfect for gifting… or for treating yourself when you want something as unique as your travels.

But the magic of La Feria isn’t just in the shopping. Just a few steps away, you’ll find a foosball table and other communal activities inviting strangers to become friends. The market is also teen-friendly! It’s a market where you can browse for treasures, then linger over a game, a laugh, or a good conversation—proof that here, connection is as important as commerce.

The Booth That Stole My Heart: Asociación Albergue Can Martín

Among the artisan jewelry, plant-based pastries, and spiritual trinkets, there’s one corner of La Feria that radiates pure love: the stand for Asociación Albergue Can Martín.

Founded by Martín Malco, who has dedicated 27 years to animal rescue and 15 years to running this shelter, Can Martín is home to more than 300 rescued dogs and cats. From Thursday to Sunday, they bring their mission to the market—welcoming visitors with wagging tails and hopeful eyes.

Here, you can:

  • Meet adoptable pups and kittens (and maybe find your new best friend).
  • Shop for a cause—pins, T-shirts, mugs, journals, toys—every purchase goes directly to food, medicine, and daily care.
  • Volunteer your time, especially during their monthly pet parade, when shelter animals are brought to meet the community and search for forever homes.

Their motto says it all:

“Somos una asociación altruista dedicada al bienestar de los animales. ¡Ayúdanos a ayudar!” (“We are a charitable association dedicated to the well-being of animals. Help us help!”)

Why La Feria Unión de Barranco Stands Out

For the solo female traveler seeking both delight and depth, La Feria offers a rare blend:

  1. Artistic Connection – Handcrafted treasures, mindful vendors, and a steady undercurrent of creativity.
  2. Female-Centered Safety – A warm, welcoming environment where you can relax and explore at your own pace.
  3. Meaningful Engagement – Every purchase, conversation, or shared smile can ripple out into real change—especially for Barranco’s four-legged residents.

Visit, Support, and Shine

  • Where & When: Jr. Unión 108, Barranco — Wednesday to Sunday; visit the Can Martín stall Thursday to Sunday afternoons.
  • How to Help The Pups and Kitties: Adopt, donate (in kind or via their donation catalog), shop their goods, or volunteer during their monthly events.

La Feria Unión de Barranco isn’t just somewhere to shop—it’s a living, breathing expression of what makes Lima’s creative soul so special. If Barranco is Lima’s artistic heart, then La Feria Unión is its open embrace—and Asociación Albergue Can Martín is the part that hugs back the tightest.

You come for the colors, the handmade treasures, and maybe a perfectly brewed coffee, but you leave with something far richer: the warmth of human (and furry) connection, the joy of supporting artisans and rescuers who pour their hearts into their work, and the sense that you’ve been part of something truly local.

Whether you’re here for an hour or an afternoon, La Feria has a way of staying with you—like the memory of a good conversation, a favorite song, or a wagging tail that wouldn’t let you go.
